Music has a certain power through which it connects to your soul. Every song has its own story and some of them tell heartbreaking tales about the singer which you can relate to on a personal level. Some songs just hit the right chords and make you happy and some press the wrong nerve and make you sad. Sometimes the most beautiful songs are the ones that make you cry and take you back to all the things that have been suppressed deep down in a corner of your heart that you don’t want to visit. Here’s a list of some of the songs that did something similar to me and the story behind it-
• The Man Who Sold The World (MTV Unplugged- Nirvana)- this song was originally sung by David Bowie the Nirvana covered in one of the best MTV Unplugged performances ever. The track starts with Kurt Cobain playing the guitar and singing a story about a a man who felt like he had sold his soul and personality, i.e his world, really seemed to fit Cobain’s feelings at the time he played this song. When I first heard this I was sitting in my hostel room and trying to figure out where life is taking me. I still shed a tear or two when I listen to this song. It’s one of the most beautiful covers ever sung.
• Cold/Mess (Cold/Mess EP- Prateek Kuhad)- this is one of my favorites songs of all time. Prateek Kuhad has got something unique and beautiful on his voice that makes you fall in love with his singing each time you hear him over and over again. The song is a story about a couple who being truly and madly in love, can’t stay together because they are just not meant to be. It can be something you long for or something that you’ve been working all your life for but can’t get. For me it’s Prateek Kuhad’s magical voice that melts my heart. He reaches the high notes with perfection and aces the lower ones which when coupled with his heartbreaking lyrics, make you want to grab a box of tissue each time you hear the song.
• Bohemian Rhapsody (A Night At The Opera- Queen)- this is, without a spec of doubt, one of the best songs written. The writing on this song is spellbinding and will you leave you awestruck in the sheer brilliance of Freddie Mercury’s writing and singing abilities. This song reminded me of someone I was leaving and I didn’t know when I’ll see them again. Listen to Freddie Mercury I just couldn’t help but cry and think about all the beautiful memories that I have and the things that I want to do in the future. This track is brilliant and I can’t recommend it enough to people.
• Wake Me Up ( True- Avicii)- everyone who listens to dance music is a fan or knows Avicii. His sudden death was one of the most tragic events of the recent times. On 20th April, 2018 (the day Avicii passed away), I heard the news about his death in the night and I was feeling devastated. I couldn’t think about ways to process it but to listen to his songs. I heard this over and over again and sang each line to pay my respect to a true legend and one of the reason why I started liking dance music.
• Stay (Beerbongs & Bentley’s- Post Malone)- this song is an acoustic guitar based song by Post Malone. I heard this song for the first time when I was chilling with my friends in the hostel for the last time as it was the last day for most of us in the hostel. This song made us go back to all our wonderful memories that we made during our stay at our hostel in Mumbai. Still whenever I listen to this song it takes me down the memory lane to the fun I had in the hostel and leaves me in tears.
It’s amusing how something like music which is something we use to keep ourselves from getting distracted or just as a filler to mask our boredom can be so close to our hearts. Music is something that makes me feel emotions unlike anything else and I don’t think anything can replace it. The link to each song is attached to the name of the song, do check them out.
